Welcome... A Sacred Space Installation
Public art is beginning to take on a greater significance within Bahamian culture. "Welcome" on the corner of JFK and Blake Road in Nassau, is a powerful example of that value coming to life.
Greatly influenced by Sacred Space at Clifton Pier, "Welcome" is an attempt to bring the same visual expression of the Bahamian journey alive in a very public and easily accessible setting.
"Welcome" is the result of a strong partnership between NPCC, The Ministry of Tourism and Kerzner International and, we hope, will signify an important turning point in our appreciation of art as a community and as a country. Local artists Antonius Roberts and Tyrone Ferguson have created a visual impression of the Bahamian journey stretching from our roots in slavery and acknowledging the forward momentum of our current journey.
"Welcome" was officially opened on February 15, 2007 by the
Bahamas Minister of Tourism with opening remarks given by Clint Kemp of New Providence Community Church and President and CEO of Atlantis, George Markantonis. All three agreed that "Welcome" is a wonderful representation of what can be achieved when the government, corporate sector and church work together towards a common goal.
"Welcome" is a gift to the Bahamian people and the invitation has been extended to all Bahamians, residents and visitors to visit "Welcome"...to sit for a while and to be transformed by the spirit of "Welcome".
