Antonius Roberts

Born in Nassau, Antonius studied at the Philadelphia College of Art where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in fine art and was awarded a Bocour prize for painting.

He has held many solo exhibitions and exhibited in numerous group shows including the "Emerging Artist of the Caribbean" held in Nagoya, Japan, the 22 BIENAL INTERNATIONAL de SAO PAULO and ON THE EDGE OF TIME at the interAmerican Development Bank Cultural Center in Washington DC.

Antonius has participated significantly in the development of the Art Education and National Art Gallery/Museum programs and institutions in the Bahamas. A recipient of a Commonwealth of the Bahamas Silver Jubilee Award, The Cacique Award and the Delta Sigma Theta Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to national development in art, he has also taught art at the local high school and college level for over eighteen years. He is the coordinator and supervisor of the FinCo summer art workshop and the architect and coordinator of the Central Bank of the Bahamas art competitions and exhibitions.

The Rhode Island School of Design ("RISD") recognized Antonius Contributions to the Arts by inviting him as their Special Guest artist during the month of May 2000. While there, he spoke to the Alumni Association group, gave private critiques to junior painting students and gave lecture on his art to the student body.

 

As a result of this visit, ten art students and two art professors from RISD came to the Bahamas for twenty days, to conduct RISD's first winter session in the islands of New Providence and Exuma. While in Exuma, the students lived and worked with Antonius Roberts.

Colonial Life Insurance Company Limited invited Antonius to attend the launch of their 2001 calender, "CARIBBEAN ODYSSEY" in Trinidad. His work is featured in the calendar among other artist throughout the Caribbean. While in Trinidad, Antonius Roberts conducted an art work shop for " A " Level Art Students.

Antonius was invited as a feature tutor artist for the American Diabetes Associations Annual Celebrity Art Auction and Gala, held on the evening of May th, 2001, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Brickell Key. A painting produced by Mr. Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals, under the tutorage of Mr. Roberts was auctioned off at the highest price during this event.

Antonius 's work is represented in private collections in Europe, the United States, Japan, South Africa, Canada, the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Antonius is particularly proud to have the opportunity to present his art to Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks and Gloria and Emillio Estefan.
